KIRKMAN
DNA PROJECT

Introduction                                                                                                           DNA test kit

The Kirkman DNA Project covers the names KIRKMAN, KIRMAN, KERMAN, and KIRMOND. More surnames will be added if they are shown to be derived from the same root, and/or assist in the objectives of the project.

Objectives

The main objective is to link together branches of our family that cannot otherwise be linked due to lack of documented genealogical records. A secondary goal is to determine the number of unique (i.e. not connected) lines that exist.

Benefits of Joining

Perhaps you are stuck in your genealogical research, or have got back so far that you cannot  make further discoveries? Participating is an opportunity to uncover information not provided in the paper records, which will help with your family history research. We will also discover which family trees are related.  By joining the project, you also may find that the conventional research others have done benefits you. Already, more than half of participants have found out new information about their line - some going back to the fifteenth century!

The Basics of DNA Testing

The most useful test is for Y-DNA. This test tells you about your direct male line, which would be your father, his father, and back in time.  You must be male to take this test, and should have the Kirkman surnames..  If you believe there is a Kirkman or variant in your direct male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate.  If you are female, you will need to find a direct line male in your family tree to participate and represent your tree. We encourage males who order a Y-DNA test to order 37 markers, if possible. (see costs below) If you order less markers, you can upgrade later, though this costs a little more.

Both males and females may also be interested in learning about their direct female line, which  would be their mother, their mother's mother, and back in time. Only women pass on mtDNA to their daughters. mtDNA can also help identify sisters when there is a direct female line down from the two

target  sisters.

Both the Y-DNA and the mtDNA test results contain no personal information, and you will match or be a close match to those to whom you are related.

The Cost
If you join our project, you will get a significant price discount. The discounted prices for Y-DNA tests are Y-DNA: 12 markers $99 (more for anthropology since a match could be 1000-10000 yrs ago);  25 markers $149; 37 markers $189 (recommended).
